How we clear a blocked chimney
Finding the blockage
We look down the flue, often with a camera, to see what is stuck and where. Leaves, animal nests, fallen debris and heavy creosote buildup are the usual causes.
Clearing it from the top or the bottom
Where we can, we break up and pull out the blockage with brushes and a vacuum. Some blockages sit where the flue cannot be reached from above.
Opening the wall at the base
When debris has collected at the bottom, we open the wall at the base of the chimney, take it out, and close the wall again. See the photo of one such opening.
Checking what caused it
Once the flue is clear we check it for damage, so the same problem does not come back. Repairs, if needed, are quoted separately. See chimney repairs.
Chimney clog questions
How do I know my chimney is clogged?
Smoke coming back into the room, a fire that is hard to light or will not stay lit, and odd smells from the fireplace all point to a blockage. A camera inspection confirms it.
What usually blocks a chimney?
Leaves and other debris, birds' and squirrels' nests, pieces of broken flue lining or brick, and creosote buildup. A missing cap makes the first two much more likely.
Do I need to stop using the fireplace or boiler?
Yes, until the flue is clear. A blocked flue can push smoke and carbon monoxide back into the home, and creosote buildup can ignite.
Why would you open the wall at the bottom of the chimney?
Debris falls to the base. If it has packed in below the fireplace or the boiler connection, opening the wall at the base is the way to get it out. We close the opening afterward.
Can a cap prevent clogs?
It helps. A cap keeps nesting animals and leaves out of the flue. See chimney caps, or chimney sweeping for yearly cleaning.
